Anxiety, Stress and Tension are the companions of most of the students especially during the time of examination or choosing career and also in everyday life. Day by day with the advancement of technology and science, a vast world is open to our students to explore, study and grow. At the same time our students are anxious and stressed for their study matters and other factors of their life and often take many wrong decisions. So, it’s an important issue to know about the various types of Stress Faced by Students in their life.
Types of Stress Faced by Students
There are various types of stress and anxiety in student life- stress due to their academic load, parental pressure, peer pressure, inability to take decisions, poor health, family issues, substance abuse disorders of students, failed relationship and so many. Often, it’s the critical condition for the students to deal with those stressors and they suffer a lot both physically and mentally to cope up. So, it’s necessary to know in detail about the stress faced by students and the coping strategies.
Academic stress is the most common and most severe stress faced by students- not only the college and university students but also the high school and middle school students and even the primary school students also face the academic stress in life. It is the stress created due to academic matters, to do good in academic field mainly in assessment and examinations.
The factor which contributes to this academic stress is the ‘ Higher Rank or Good Grade or Good Percentage of Marks’ mainly. Yes, every student should do well in study but not all are of some category, it’s not the ability of all students to get A+ or A grade, some will surely get B or C grade.
But this fact is not accepted by the parents of students and also by some students resulting in severe stress and tension in them. Moreover, lack of preparation, ill health, lack of knowledge to choose career etc. associated with high expectations of students and parents create the severe academic stress.
The coping strategies of Academic Stress are-
.Good Preparation for examinations, Regular study and follow up so that you are prepared to face the tests and examinations.
.Lower your Expectations, it must be based on the ability, intellect and scope of students.
. The Parents should not give the students a great goal to achieve or not to force them to fulfill their (parent’s) dreams.
. Must take Healthy Diet and Good Sleep.
. Do regular exercise, yoga or meditation to increase focus and attention.
Stress due to Parental Pressure
It is the most severe type of Stress faced by students- the students feel stress, tension and anxiety due to continuous pressure from parents in the form of high expectations or the expectations not in line with the ability of students or to strictly follow the rules and regulations of family or only to obey the parents or decision of parents etc. This type of Stress faced by students due to parents is known as Stress from Parental Pressure.
The causes of parental pressure are unfulfilled dreams of parents, high expectations of parents, the tendency to follow the trends of society and the mindset of recognizing their children not as the separate human being but as the ‘ asset’ of them. Sometimes parental pressure makes the children depressed, worthless and gives them the feeling of guilt and shame resulting in clinical depression, anxiety disorders, social isolation and even the attempt to suicide.
The coping strategy of this stress faced by students must involve the open communication between parents and children and also to change the mindset of parents. The parents should treat their children as the separate human being and never force them to fulfill the unfulfilled dreams of parents.
Stress due to Peer Pressure
Peer pressure is also one of the critical type of stress faced by students in their life. All the students have their own friends, peer groups and they are the life lines of each student. A life without friends or peer groups can not be imagined. At the adolescence phase or at the beginning of young age, the friends or peer groups are the most important in life and sometimes more than the parents. So, the students like to do, say or behave in a certain way as their peers do or behave.
Sometimes they also force themselves to do, behave in a certain way or to choose some things as their peers do only to be included in the group of peers. Sometimes also their friends or peers really force them to do some things like to choose the courses of study or the coaching institutes or other simple things like clothes, people or attitudes. This type of pressure forced by peer groups is known as the Peer Pressure.
The causes of this type of stress faced by students are- too much involvement with peers but little or no involvement with Parents, prevalence of many issues in family like parental conflicts, low self-esteem of students, lack of decision-making ability etc.
The coping strategies of this stress faced by students are –
. Strengthening the Bond between Parents and Children through open communication.
. Help the children to take their own decisions by not pressurizing themselves to follow others.
. Help the children to boost their self-confidence
. Help the children to know about themselves- their abilities, interest, strengths and also weaknesses.
Stress due to Financial Issue
Many students suffer a lot of tension, stress due to their poor economic conditions- their inability to continue higher education or better courses due to financial crisis of the family make them upset, stressed and depressed. Many brilliant students cannot focus on their studies as they know that it will be not possible for her\his parents to help them in their further education though they score high in examinations. This type of anxiety and stress faced by students due to financial issues is known as financial stress.
Actually, here the students only need to accept the fact that they should make their future academic plan based on their financial situation of the family. Now-a-days many scholarship programs are available for meritorious students in different colleges and also almost free education in many general degree colleges of many countries. Those students can choose those instead of being exhausted in stress and anxiety.
Stress due to Family Conflicts
It is one of the most critical stresses faced by students as it may make the students traumatized and may be the victim chronic stress disorder. If the condition of the family is unhealthy- there are frequent conflicts between parents or other family members, continuous verbal abuse or also the physical abuse, one or both of the parents are addicted to drugs or alcohol etc., then it’s impossible for any student to pursue study in that family. Student from this type of family is always in tension, stress and fear and cannot focus on their activities.
Here the coping strategies is obviously the Family Therapy, the members of the family especially the parents should understand that their children are always in stress and fear due to their unhealthy activities. Stress faced by students due to the domestic violence in family may make them the victim of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) or other mental health issues. Here teachers and community members also must provide support and care to those students to overcome the Stress faced by students.

Stress, anxiety, tension will always come to our life in various forms from various sources and our students are also struggling with those stressors. But the parents, teachers, counselors and other well-wishers can help the students through open communication, guidance, motivation and assisting them in studies.
